Karnataka Woman Becomes HC of Britain For One Day
The 23-year-old Sanjana Hiremath hailing from Hubballi got selected from 180 applicants to become British Deputy High Commissioner in Bengaluru for a day on the 25th of September 2023. She accepted the role of a career diplomat and carried out responsibilities for the same for one day. As a result, she gained some valuable insights regarding the India-Uk partnership in working. She was selected out of a list of 180 applicants from across the country and served as the British Deputy High Commissioner for a day.
On that day, she shared her ideas to advance the meeting with the British Deputy High Commissioner to Karnataka & Kerala, Chandru Iyer of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) located in the British Deputy High Commission office in Bengaluru. During lunch, she spoke about the leadership roles of women with Australian Consul General Hilary McGeachy. Sanjana Hiremath even got a chance to speak with Uma Mahadevan (IAS), the Chevening Gurukul Fellow and Additional Chief Secretary. She had a free-wheeling chat with Uma Mahadevan about democratizing education through access to libraries, skills training, SDGs, and Chevening scholarships.
The British High Commission in India has been organizing this event every year since 2017 to celebrate the International Day of the Girl Child, which is celebrated on October 11 every year. The main purpose of this event to allow one girl or a woman to serve as a British deputy high commissioner of Bengaluru is to create a platform for young women and allow them to challenge and champion girls’ rights and mark the notable significance of women in leadership roles. Out of more than 100 applicants spanning across the nation, she was the chosen one for the post of Deputy High Commissioner for a day in Bengaluru.
Sanjana Hiremath, an employee of the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) shared her thoughts regarding her experience of this and said, “Spending a day as the British Deputy High Commissioner in Bengaluru was a dream come true. I had the opportunity to interact with and learn from the British Deputy High Commission in Bengaluru’s team’s leadership and women leaders across wide-ranging fields. Like I said in my competition entry – I will continue to be the goalkeeper and make a difference.”
Even the British Deputy High Commissioner to Karnataka and Kerala, Chandru Iyer said, “The ‘High Commissioner for a Day’ competition is an opportunity to provide a platform for young women to raise awareness about girls’ rights and highlight the importance of women in leadership roles. Sanjana was an excellent fit for my role as Deputy High Commissioner. I wish her all success in her future goals.” About Sanjana Hiremath Sanjana Hiremath is a 23-year-old resident of Hubballi, Karnataka, who holds a Master’s Degree in Media and Communications. The London Stock Exchange Group’s employee, Sanjana said that it was a dream come true for her to serve as a career diplomat for a day.
