From exaggerated capes to voluminous gowns, fashion’s biggest night saw A-listers offering their unique take on the ‘Garden of Time’ theme.

Every year, the Met Gala red carpet produces some of the most memorable celebrity fashion moments of all time. Tonight’s very best-dressed attendees were those who paid homage to this year’s Met Gala theme, i.e. “the Garden of Time” as the dress code, doing so in both thoughtful and unexpected ways. The event was held in New York City on the 6th of May night, the fashion event celebrated the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET) Costume Institute’s new exhibition, Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion, which focuses on some of the most fragile pieces spanning centuries of fashion history.

The annual fundraising event, which is held in celebration of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, is one of the most exclusive events of the year. The gala draws attendees from across industries, from tech to Hollywood. Invitees are hand-selected by Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour, and this year, tickets cost $75,000 each. Vogue reported that last year’s event raised a record-setting $22 million for the Costume Institute.

Here is the list of best-dressed celebrities at the Met Gala 2024:

Alia Bhatt in Custom-Couture Sabyasachi Saree

Alia Bhatt did not disappoint with her dress selection at the Met Gala 2024. For the star-studded event, the actress chose a custom-couture saree by Sabyasachi, teamed with an exaggerated train, hand embroidered with silk floss, beads, sequins, semi-precious stones and fringed with glass beads. The hand-crafted blouse is studded with emeralds, Basra pearls, tourmalines and multi-coloured sapphires. This marks Alia’s second appearance at this prestigious event.

Alia dropped the pictures on her Instagram handle and captioned the same talking about the significance of the theme and about the outfit as well.

Zendaya in Margiela

Hollywood actor, Zendaya was one of the first to walk down the red carpet at the star-studded event, in a custom Margiela gown by John Galliano. The costume represents a clear reference to the designer’s Spring 1999 couture collection for Dior. The makeup was done by Pat McGrath with a headpiece from Philip Treacy, giving one of the edgiest yet fascinating looks at Met Gala 2024.

For her second look of the evening, the actor gave us all something else to write about when she showed up in another look to close out the carpet: a Givenchy Spring 1999 couture gown, topped with a flower bouquet headpiece from the Alexander McQueen Spring 2007 collection, by Philip Treacy. This further proved that she and stylist Law Roach simply don’t miss.

Gigi Hadid in Thom Browne

Gigi Hadid donned a custom Thom Browne corset dress for the Met Gala 2024. Gigi’s outfit was a custom-made hand-crafted Thom Browne corset dress for the spectacular evening. The entire outfit was embroidered with over two million white micro bugle beads and the draped tailored jacket was in white silk moire, with black duchess satin tipping and rose appliques throughout with wingtip pumps in white and yellow pebble grain leather.

Rosalía in Dior

Upon hearing the theme of the Costume Institute’s exhibition for this year’s Met Gala, “Sleeping Beauties,” the Spanish singer immediately started to envision her look at the gala. During the interview, she mentioned since the theme is Sleeping Beauties and how when a person falls asleep all that they can see is black.

The black gown of Rosalía by Dior was a re-creation of the house’s Ciseaux dress from 1949, and she said it made her feel like a “black tulip.”

Greta Lee in Loewe

Greta Lee justified the theme as she awakened and reimagined a Loewe SS23 runway look with 3-D floral motifs. The see-through outfit was accompanied by white heels and statement rings.

Jennifer Lopez in Schiaparelli

The co-host of the night JLo walked down the red carpet in a custom Schiaparelli couture by Daniel Roseberry. Her dress was designed using four butterfly wings enlarged to cover the whole surface of the dress. The outfit was a result of 800 hours of work with 2,500,000 silver foil bugle beads crafted on it. The outfit is not just about flowers but the butterflies that signify metamorphosis and transformation. Something which was asleep wakes up beautiful and powerful and brand new. The designer Mariel Haenn also talks more about the outfit in her Instagram post. “The butterfly is a perfect articulation of a sleeping beauty. Something that goes to sleep and wakes up beautiful also still lives in a garden without being a flower. The butterfly and idea of metamorphosis has been part of Schiaparelli’s DNA since the beginning,” she stated.

Cynthia Erivo

And on her chest rested a white diamond necklace with a giant pink diamond at the centre.

Nicole Kidman in Balenciaga

While most attendees opted for a more literal interpretation of “The Garden of Time” with floral pieces, Denma of Balenciaga was more interested in exploring the time aspect. Each guest dressed in Balenciaga was wearing a look that referenced another that had come from long before it like Nicole Kidman’s gown. The gown was inspired by a Cristóbal Balenciaga Haute Couture piece from 1951, with tiers of feathered details.
