Nikki Haley Secures First Win Over Trump in Republican Primary

Republican presidential contender Nikki Haley won the Washington DC on Sunday, her first victory in the nominating process.

On Sunday, 3rd March 2024, Nikki Haley secured victory over the Republican presidential primary in Washington, DC. This is her first victory in the race against former president Donald Trump. Her win comes ahead of Super Tuesday, where a total of 15 states and one territory will vote. Nikki Haley will pick up 19 delegates from her win, a small portion of the 1,215 delegates needed to clinch the nomination.

Haley’s spokesperson, Olivia Perez-Cubas stated in a report regarding the recent win that she does not find it surprising that the Republicans who are closest to Washington’s dysfunction are actively rejecting Donald Trump and the chaos he brings with him.

Meanwhile, the campaign on Trump’s side released a statement mentioning the statement a “Statement on Nikki Haley Being Crowned Queen of The Swamp.” Haley garnered 1,274 votes to former President Trump’s 676 with all precincts reporting, according to the US-based newsdaily. This win temporarily interrupts Donald Trump’s dominance in the GOP voting contests, although he is expected to secure several more delegates in the upcoming Super Tuesday race.

A Tough Fight for Nikki Haley

Just recently, Trump won Michigan’s Republican primary, with Haley yet again losing another 2024 contest. This victory of Trump comes after Haley lost in her home state, South Carolina. However, she vowed to continue the fight. Later on, the Haley campaign characterised the Michigan loss as a bad sign for Trump. It noted that about one-third of Republican primary voters cast ballots for someone other than the former president.

According to the NBC news channel, Haley campaign’s national spokesperson Olivia Perez-Cubas stated, “Let this serve as another warning sign that what has happened in Michigan will continue to play out across the country. So long as Donald Trump is at the top of the ticket, Republicans will keep losing to the socialist left. Our children deserve better.”

Donald Trump defeated Nikki Haley in Iowa New Hampshire and Nevada regions. In all of these regions, Haley did not appear on the ballot. She was also beaten by Trump in the US Virgin Islands, before being defeated in South Carolina.

Before the Michigan winner was announced, Haley defended her decision to stay in the race. “We’ve only seen a handful of states vote. I mean, look, I’ve said this before as much as the media wants to jump ahead, we’re taking this one state, one day at a time,” she told CNN’s Dana Bash.

At present, all eyes are fixated on 16 states that will cast ballots on the 5th of March 2024, which is the Super Tuesday. The states falling under these include Alabama, Alaska, American Samoa (caucus), Arkansas, California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia. On top of that, American Samoa is also scheduled to hold a nominating contest on March 5, 2024.

Furthermore, the Democratic primary in DC will take place in June.
