Billie Eilish, Emma Stone, Indian-Born Nisha nominated for Oscars
The nominations for the 96th Academy Awards were announced last week. Following the announcements, many shared their excitement about being nominated for Oscars in certain categories. Among them was Billie Eilish who secured a spot for her second Oscar nomination in Best Original Song, Emma Stone for Best Actress For her performance in the movie Poor Things, and Delhi-based, Canadian filmmaker Nisha Pahuja’s ‘To Kill a Tiger’ being nominated for Best Documentary Feature at the Oscars. The mentioned personalities took to Instagram to share their joy at being nominated for the Academy Awards.
The 22-year-old Popstar and Grammy-winning artist shared a sweet post on Instagram the next day, featuring the Barbie movie’s star, Margot Robbie. In the post, the singer tightly embraced the actor as they both posed for the camera. Additionally, she also shared an image capturing the touching & sentimental moment when their tender ballad played in the movie. In a joint statement, the sibling duo expressed their sentiments regarding the scene. She penned the post saying that she is extremely grateful to the members of the Academy Awards and also to be a part of the movie ‘Barbie.’ In addition to this, she sent her heartfelt thanks towards the Academy appreciating the recognition alongside a multitude of songwriters whom they deeply respect and admire.
Their latest nomination arrives two years after clinching their first-ever Oscar in 2022 for their work on No Time to Die for the James Bond film of the same title.
Eilish’s touching ballad, exploring themes of self-discovery has been warmly embraced throughout the awards season. This success culminated in a recent Golden Globe victory for Best Original Song.
The other nominees for Best Original Song include Wahzhazhe (A Song for My People) from Killers of the Flower Moon, featuring music and lyrics by Scott George, I’m Just Ken by Ryan Gosling, Becky G and Diane Warren’s The Fire Inside from Flamin’ Hot, and Jon Batiste’s It Never Went Away from American Symphony.
On the other hand, Actor Emma Stone received an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Actress in a Leading Role’ for her performance as the character Bella Baxter in the movie, ‘Poor Things.’ The movie has received a total of 11 nominations in the Oscar including Best Picture, Adapted Screenplay, and many more. In response, Emma Stone said that she is beyond grateful to the Academy for nominating her as both actress and producer among other exceptional nominees, and also for enlisting the movie in various categories by recognizing its worth.
Mark Ruffalo, Emma’s co-star also got nominated for the Oscar in the category of ‘Actor in a supporting role’ as Duncan Wedderburn. “The team of artists who contributed to Poor Things gave it everything and I am forever thankful for the opportunity to play Bella and see the world through her eyes. She has shown me that life is so much more than just sugar and violence,” said the actress. Emma Stone previously received Oscars for Best Actress in a Leading Role in 2017 for her performance as Mia in the movie La La Land.
Among all these nominees is Indian-born Nisha Pahuja who made her way to the list of Oscar nominees for her movie ‘To Kill a Tiger.’ To Kill a Tiger is a feature documentary film based in a small village in Jharkhand, India, that follows the story of Ranjit and his battle to bring justice to his daughter, who was sexually assaulted by three men. The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2022, where it won the Amplify Voices Award for Best Canadian Feature Film.
Other projects credited to Nisha’s name include the feature documentary Bollywood Bound (2003), the three-part series Diamond Road (2007), The World Before Her (2012), and To Kill a Tiger. She has received recognitions like Best Documentary Feature and Jury Award Winner from the Tribeca Film Festival, Best Canadian Documentary from Hot Docs and TIFF’s Canada’s Top Ten, and an Emmy-nominated film.
