Filmfare OTT Awards 2023: Alia, Sonakshi, Karishma Win Big

Filmfare OTT Awards is back with its fourth edition. The grand event was held in Mumbai earlier this week. These awards honor the finest directors, artists, storytellers, musicians, and technicians from the OTT platform which includes both series and films. The awards are a way of honoring the art of narrating a story in the Indian streaming space and the event was set in motion with much splendor. Nominees were web series and films released on various OTT platforms from the period between August 1, 2022, and July 31, 2023. Shows like Scoop, Jubilee, Dahaad, and Kohrra bagged maximum awards. 

Alia Bhatt, Karishma Tanna, Rajkumar Rao, and Manoj Bajpayee were the top among the others who clinched this year’s top awards of the Filmfare OTT Awards 2023 edition. The night turned out to be a grand and unforgettable one for Alia Bhatt who bagged the Best Actor Award, Web Original Film (Female) for her Netflix Debut film Darlings. Darlings is an Indian film in the Hindi language, released in 2022. Directed and co-written by Jasmeet K. Reen, this movie follows the story of two women finding courage and love despite exceptional situations. This dark-comedy movie is the directorial debut movie of Jasmeet. 

On the other hand, Manoj Bajpayee won the Best Actor Award, Web Original Film (Male) for the legal drama ‘Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai.’ Directed by Apoorv Singh in co-production with Zee Studios, Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai is a 2023 Indian Hindi-language legal drama film, that follows the story of Adv. PC Solanki stands for the truth and the struggles faced by him to bring justice to a minor. This courtroom drama is inspired by the true events of a five-year-long standalone fight of a regular session court lawyer. 

Also, web series Kohrra, Soop, and web movies Monica, O My Darling, and Gulmohar made it to the top and secured spots in the winners list this year. Nevertheless, Jubilee, a film by Vikramaditya Motwane outshined others as it bagged over 5 awards in various departments. Other honorable mentions who left a striking impression in the hearts of the audience with their performance were Suvinder Vicky who was awarded Best Actor, Series (Male): Drama for his role in the Netflix series Kohrra, and actress Rajshri Deshpande, who won Best Actor, Series (Female): Drama for slaying the role of Neelam Krishnamoorthy in Trial By Fire. 

Vijay Varma was awarded Best Actor, Series (male) Critics: Drama, for his stellar performance in the crime series Dahaad. Whereas, his co-star Sonakshi Sinha bagged the Best Actor, Series (Female), Critics: Drama. Dahaad is a Hindi-language police procedural crime thriller web series created by Reema Kagti and Zoya Akhtar, directed by Reema Kagti and Ruchika Oberoi, and starring Sonakshi Sinha, Gulshan Devaiah, Vijay Varma and Sohum Shah. Dahaad is the first-ever Indian web series to premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival. The show was streamed on Amazon Prime Video on 12 May 2023.

Sonakshi shared the award with Karishma Tanna for her beautiful performance in Hansal Mehta’s Scoop, which was based on the life of former crime reporter Jigna Vora. Scoop is a 2023 Indian crime drama streaming television series created and directed by Hansal Mehta and Mrunmayee Lagoo Waikul for Netflix. It stars Karishma Tanna, Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub, and Harman Baweja in lead roles, along with Prosenjit Chatterjee, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Deven Bhojani in supporting roles. The series is produced by Sarita Patil and Dikssha Jyote Routray. The series was released on 2 June 2023 and is based on Jigna Vora’s biographical memoir Behind Bars in Byculla: My Days in Prison. The plot follows the real-life story of Jigna Vora who was accused of the murder of mid-day reporter Jyotirmoy Dey in June 2011.

Coming to the comedy genre, Abhishek Banerjee and Maanvi Gagroo won the Best Actor, Series (Male) and (Female) awards respectively for their laughter-filled performance in the series The Great Weddings Of Munnes and TVF Tripling respectively.
