Karaka Chaturthi commonly known as Karwa Chauth is an auspicious festival for married Hindu women. It is celebrated on the Chaturthi of Krishna Paksha in the Hindu month of Kartik. While generally, the date remains consistent throughout the nation, in regions such as Gujarat, South India, and Maharashtra which strictly follow the Amant Calendar, the Karwa Chauth is seen falling in the Hindu month of Ashwin. According to Drik Panchang, this year, Karwa Chauth is going to be celebrated on November 1, 2023 (Wednesday). 

Significance of Karwa Chauth

On this promising day, married women go through an all-day fasting vrat which is called as nirjala vrat. During this day, women partake in fasting from dawn until the moonrise which is believed to be done to pray for the long life of their husbands. They restrain themselves from taking a speck of food to a sip of water and end the fasting after worshipping the moon and offering the Arghya(offering holy water to the moon). The vrat ends when the husbands offer their wives a mouthful of food and a glass of water. Catching the glimpse and sight of the moon is indeed necessary for this vrat to be fruitful. This festival holds great significance in Hindu culture and is celebrated in grandiose across the country. 

Women arrange a grand celebration on this day and offer their prayers to Chauth Mata or Gauri Mata and keep an earthen pot filled with water to offer water to the moon after the moon has risen.

Celebration and Rituals of Karwa Chauth 2023:

According to the Drik Panchang, the puja shubh muhurat falls between 5:36 a.m. and 6:54 p.m. this year. Chaturthi Tithi of Karwa Chauth 2023 starts on October 31 at 9:30 p.m. and ends on November 1 at 9:19 p.m.

On October 31, the women start the tradition by applying mehndi on their hands and feet which is one of the main traditions of this festival. Applying mehndi is considered as a symbol of marital bliss and good fortune.

Before the dawn of the next day, the married women have a pre-dawn meal called sargi. Sargi plays a vital role in assisting women in sustaining this day-long fast. A traditional Sargi thali which is given by the mother-in-law to their daughter-in-law consists of dry fruits, sweets, fruits, and lightly cooked foods.

Puja Rituals:

  • Taking an early morning holy bath upon waking up.
  • Having sargi before sunrise and also before starting the rituals.
  • Fasting for the whole day and dressing up themselves in new traditional clothes.
  • Offering their prayers to the deity.
  • After the moonrise, offering the Arghya to the moon and eventually breaking the fasting.
